In September 1914 the submarine was redeployed to Tenedos join the fleet watching the entrance of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dardanelles - Dardanelles http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-Wilson17-2 - [3]

Later in 1914 while on patrol off the Dardanelles B11 chased a torpedo boat for 4 miles up the straight. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-ch-3 - [4]

In April 1915 after http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_E15 - HMS E15 ran aground off http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kephez_point&action=edit&redlink=1 - Kephez point HMS B11 was one of a number of boats to attempt to destroy the wreck. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-Wilson75-4 - [5] The attack failed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-Wilson75-4 - [5]

Overview of the Dardanelle raid leading to the sinking of the Mesudiye

On 13 December 1914, B11, commanded by Lieutenant http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Douglas_Holbrook - Norman Douglas Holbrook , entered the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dardanelles - Dardanelles and torpedoed the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Empire - Turkish http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battleship - battleship http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_battleship_Mesudiye - Mesudiye . B11 had been selected for the mission over http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B9 - HMS B9 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B10 - HMS B10 due to having been fitted with a new battery. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-ch-3 - [4] The French boats at the submarine base had been rejected as it was agreed that they were less suitable than the British submarines. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-gray98-6 - [7] Guards were constructed over the various projections on the submarine's hull to reduce the risk of snagging on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_mine - mines . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-gray96-7 - [8]

B11 started its journey from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenedos - Tenedos http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-jameson-8 - [9] . Before the submarine reached the first row of mines it was discovered that one of the guards had become damaged making it worse than useless. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-gray98-6 - [7] The guard was removed and the attack continued. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-gray98-6 - [7] B11 then had to pass under five rows of mines through then uncharted currents http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-jameson-8 - [9] . Passing through the minefield took about five hours http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-jameson-8 - [9] . After B11 hit Messoudieh it took eight hours for the submarine to escape initially with any attempt to use the periscope resulting in heavy fire. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-jameson-8 - [9]

Lt. Holbrook was awarded the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_Cross - Victoria Cross , the first for service in a submarine, his First Lieutenant, Sydney Winn, was awarded the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distinguished_Service_Order - Distinguished Service Order , and every member of the crew was awarded the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distinguished_Service_Medal_%28Australia%29 - Distinguished Service Medal . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-ch-3 - [4]

On 24 July 1916 the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prize_court - Prize court decided that the submarine's company was entitled to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prize_money - prize money for the sinking of Mesudiye, and an award of £3,500 was made, of which Holbrook received £601 10s 2d, Win £481 4s 2d, chief petty officers £240 12s 1d, and seamen £120 6s 1d. This represented three years' pay for a seaman. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-ch-3 - [4] On 24 August 1915 the town of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holbrook,_New_South_Wales - Germanton in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_South_Wales - New South Wales , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia - Australia , was renamed "Holbrook" in his honour and a replica of B11 can be seen there.

Move to Venice

The submarine was relocated from Malta to Venice in October 1915 arriving on the 28th. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-Wilson96-9 - [10] On 11 December of the same year the submarine under the command of Lieutenant Samuel Gravener was engaged by an Austrian flying boat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-Wilson98-10 - [11] The attack was unsuccessful and the plane suffered engine failure forcing it to land. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-Wilson98-10 - [11] Gravener attempted attack the plane with a maxim gun but it jammed and the plane was able to take off again before the submarine could ram it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-Wilson98-10 - [11]

On 17 January 1916 the submarine managed to capture the crew of an Austrian flying boat after the aircraft had suffered engine failure while returning from a bombing raid. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-Wilson98-10 - [11] On 17 March it was narrowly missed by a torpedo but was unable to locate the attacker. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-Wilson100-11 - [12]

Later in the war B11 was converted to a surface patrol craft through raising the deck level and removing the electric motor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-Maurice-0 - [1] In addition the conning tower was replaced by a wheelhouse. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-Maurice-0 - [1]

B11 was sold for scrap in 1919 in Italy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_B11#cite_note-Akermann123-1 - [2]
