The body of Private Edward Attfield 5 Bn Australian Imperial Force was discovered near Giza Base in Egypt on 30 January 1916. The authorities failed to identify his remains and he was interred in the Old Cairo War Cemetery as an unknown soldier.

Private Attfield landed in Gallipoli in May 1915, he was wounded in action on 26 May 1915 and was evacuated to Alexandria, He returned to the Peninsula in October 1915 remaining there until December 1915.

Through research it was proven that Private Attfield was the only soldier reported missing at the time of the discovery of his body.

The CWGC conducted a re-dedication service on 25 April 2018. The CWGC provided a new grave stone engraved with his name and the inscription "Beloved son of Mary and Charles I once was lost and now am found".
