Cemetery: ABBEYLEIX NEW CEMETERY
Country: Ireland, Republic of
Locality: County Laois
Historical Information: The cemetery is in the centre of the town. There is 1 Commonwealth burial of the 1914-1918 war and 2 of the 1939-1945 war here.

The following soldier is interred in this cemetery. The information shown is taken from my own research. (Any entries with an Asterix (*) contains new information that I have located.
 
 

PHELAN, James Private 17840 1st Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers

Born: Abbeyleix, Queen’s Co. (Co. Laois) *Resided: Blackhills, Abbeyleix Enlisted: Maryborough (Portlaoise), Queen’s Co. (Co. Laois).

Age: 28 Date of Death: 08/11/1915 Cause: Died Gallipoli.

*Family Notes: Son of Mrs. Mary Phelan and the late James Phelan, of Blackhills, Abbeyleix, Queen’s Co. (Co. Laois).

Religion: Roman Catholic. Trade/profession: Agricultural Labourer (1911 Census).

Census notes: The 1911 Census shows James (aged 24) residing with his parents, James (aged 72) and Mary (aged 51) at, Blackhills, Abbeyleix, Queen’s Co., also present were his brothers and sisters, Mary (aged 22), Henry (aged 15), William (aged 12) and Norah (aged 9); his parents stated that during their marriage they had nine children, eight of whom were alive at the time of the Census. The family was shown on the 1901 Census (residing at, Blackhills, Abbeyleix, Queen’s Co.) as follows; James (aged 60) and Mary (aged 40) and their children, James (aged 14), Mary (aged 13), Annie (aged 11), Bridget (aged 9), Henry (aged 5), William (aged 3) and Nora (aged 3 months).

Special notes: Private Phelan is listed on the IWM records and Soldiers Died (Part 73) as “died Gallipoli, November 8, 1915.”
