FAIRNIE, James Grieve, Private 1859, 'C' Company

Born:1896, Musselburgh.   Resided: 10 Bush Terrace, Musselburgh. Enlisted: 31/08/14, Musselburgh
Age: 19.        Date of Death: 28/06/15.      Cause of Death: KIA
Military Service: 302 days.    Family Notes: Mother, Janet, brother Andrew ( #9868 Cameron Highlanders - transferred and promoted to Corporal #20381 Machine Gun Corps)
Religion: n/k.          Trade/Profession: Telegraph Storeman

His M.I.C shows entry (2b) Balkans on 12/06/15
His WO343 ( burnt records) give his name on the Casualty Form as Fairley. There is an accompanying letter from the O/I 52nd Lowland Division about the loss of Battalion paperwork in the Gretna train crash, and that a new Nominal Roll had to be made. The soldier signed his incorrect entry, and the mistake was overlooked.

James is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Panel 26-30
