DAWSON, John Douglas, Major

Born: 1878.      Resided: 23 Regent Terrace, Edinburgh.       Enlisted: n/k
Age: 37.       Date of Death: 28/06/15.    Cause of Death: KIA
Son of John Gillon Dawson, wife, Dove Agnes Cotton Dawson

His M.I.C shows he entered the Dardanelles on 23/05/15.
Dawson led 'C' Company, and during the action of 28th June, " On the right of the 4th RS, the 7th RS were equally successful. Major Sanderson advanced with 'C' Company in the dash for the nearest opposing trench, lying about 300 yards away......After a short halt, during which the supporting waves of the H.L.I closed up, the advance on the final objective, H12 was begun. By this time the Turks, having recovered from their panic, delivered such a terrific fire that the RS fell literally in bundles. Half-way across Major Sanderson dropped and Captain Dawson and Lieut. Thomson were killed as they neared their goal....." ( from ' The Royal Scots 1914-1919' by Major John Ewing)
His promotion from Captain to Major was announced on 23rd May 1915.

He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Panel 26-30.
