Dunn Frederick James Private 3114 5th Bn. Royal Irish Regiment.
Born: Windsor, Berkshire Resided: Dungannon, Co Tyrone Enlisted: Omagh, Co Tyrone (26/8/1914).
Age: 33            Date of death: 16/8/1915 Cause of death: Killed in action.
*Previous Military Service: Formerly 11284 Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (6th Bn.). Private Dunn enlisted on 26/8/1914; he initially signed himself as “Thomas J. Dunn” but “Thomas” was subsequently struck out and he signed as “Frederick J”. He was promoted to Corporal rank on 30/9/1914 whilst serving with 6th Bn. Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers; he was posted to 5th Bn. Royal Irish Regiment on 10/2/1915, He reverted to the rank of Private at his own request on 17/5/1915.
*Family notes: Husband of Edith Mary (nee Fuller) Dunn, of 1, Manor Terrace, Clewer Green, Windsor; formerly of The Park, Dungannon, Co. Tyrone; father of William Benjamin (b.23/1/1908), Eleanor Norah (B. 19/8/1909), Thomas Patrick (B. 14/4/1911), Mary Maureen (B. 14/2/13) and Edith Alice (B. 15/11/1914).
Religion: Church of England. Trade/profession: Estate Carpenter Domestic (1911 English Census).
 
Lieutenant T. E. N. Byrne, 5th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment (Pioneers) has written Mrs. Dunn, the Park, Dungannon, informing her that her husband, Corporal Frederick J. Dunn of that Battalion has been killed in action at the Gallipoli Peninsula, and stating that he was killed instantaneously. He had carried on his work cheerfully to the last, and had behaved as all would have wished him to do. Corporal Dunn who leaves a wife and several small children, had been estate carpenter to the Earl of Ranfurley for over three years. He had been a Section Leader in the Dungannon Battalion U.V.F., and had volunteered with the Dungannon Contingent on 26th August 1914, which joined the 6th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He afterwards transferred to his present Regiment. He had four years service in the 1st (Volunteer) Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment in England, of which country he was a native.                                                                                           The Belfast Newsletter, 2 September 1915.
 
Other notes: Private Dunn’s Medal Index Card shows him as entering the Gallipoli Theatre of Operations on 8/7/1915; his Index Card shows him as “K.I.A.” not date is shown, his surname is spelt as “Dunne” on the Index Card. His wife carried out extensive attempts to regain his personal effects but to no avail, it would appear that they had been lost.
Census notes: The 1911 English Census shows Frederick (aged 29) residing with his wife Edith M. (aged 28) at, Carpenter's Lodge, St Leonard's Lodge, Clewer Green, Windsor, also present were their children, William B. (aged 3) and E. Norah (aged 1); they stated that during their three years of marriage they had two children both of whom were alive at the time of the Census.
