During intermittent light rain, the Dawn Service at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne, Victoria,
Australia was held with a record crowd with around 85,000 people in attendance. This service which marked the one hundredth anniversary of the Gallipoli landing started at 5.40am and in respect to the memory of the fallen the service was kept unchanged with no extra pageantry.

This was followed at 9.00am by a parade of veterans and representatives for the various conflicts that Australia has been involved with since federation. This parade concluded at 12.30pm. A highlight of the parade was the inclusion of the Creswick Light Horse group which thrilled the crowd. Ones wet hands get mighty sore after clapping for three and a half hours but considering the sacrifice that so many have given it is but a small token of appreciation.

The traditional Anzac Day Australian rules football game was played at the MCG. This was also preceded by a cavalcade of ten or so veterans in open top cars to the rapturous applause. A short service was then conducted where a minutes silence was observed by the 88500 strong crowd. After the Kiwi and Australian anthems were sung the crowd roared and applauded.

A fitting tribute for those who have served Australia so well.

The following link gives a far better description of the day than this poor scribe can give justice to.
