My grandfather, James Green, served at Gallipoli.  His dog tag reads, "GREEN, J. 428154  420 W.L.R.E"

In his late 70s he wrote about his time at Gallipoli.  His company  landed on a beach (V?) from a ship that was run aground.  Could this have been S.S. River Clyde?  Were there other ships that were similarly grounded?

His squad of six (originally 14 men) went back to the same grounded ship at dusk on 10 January 1916.  They were taken to HMS Bull Dog and transported to Lemnos.   His best friend, Bert Turton also survived Gallipoli and they spent the rest of the war together.

Hi, Welcome to the forum.

Your Grandfather;'s Medal Index Card and Medal Rolls show him entering the Egyptian Theatre of Operations on 31/11/1915.

The River Clyde was beached at V Beach on 25/4/1915 and remained there all during the campaign and until after the war.

The vessel was used as a store ship and for various other purposes during the campaign. Many troops record how they moved through her when they arrived at Gallipoli.

Your Grandfather was a member of the Territorial Force and had actually two numbers "8057" and "428154". He enlisted on 31/5/1915.

I have sent you some documents by email

Best regards
