This song is one of only two Irish songs that I know mention the Irish involvement in Gallipolli.
While it states that the young soldier marched away with his head erect and as proud as can be, it turns into a kind of a rebel ballad. 
It actually in a way shows how Public opinion in Ireland changed during and after the war towards those men who volunteered to fight. It should be noted that conscription was never introduced in Ireland.
