Connelly, Eric Winfield

(Brother of Clive Emerson Connelly)
Enrolled 1905.
Carlton College; Articled Clerks’ course; 3 years in Junior Cadets; Lieutenant 2ndBattalion Senior Cadets, three years; 2/Lieutenant 8th Infantry Battalion (Bendigo), three years.
Enlisted 18 September 1914, 2nd Lieutenant 7th Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces; sailed 19 October 1914; at Gallipoli landing 25 April 1915, and wounded the same day; returned to Australia 21 December 1915. Appointed Staff Captain 10th Infantry Brigade 1/5/1916; Sailed again 27 May 1916; France 17 November 1916, Brigade Major 6/2/1917; Major 3 March 1917; to General Staff 3rd Division 12 February 1918. Awarded Distinguished Services Order 28 December 1917 for gallantry at Messines Ridge, where he was badly gassed; mentioned in Despatches 7 November 1917 and 8 November 1918. Wounded in action in France on 8 September 1918, and died of his wounds next day.
